In the near term, simple payback calculations, driven by low-cost energy, may discourage investment in decarbonising steel production, which accounts for 8% of global emissions. However, climate change concerns are driving new regulations and demand for lower emission steel whilst global instabilities in fossil fuel supply could impact energy prices.

These risks are also critical to economic analyses, even in the near term. Steel producers that prioritise decarbonisation now are therefore more likely to stay ahead of emerging trends and maintain their competitive advantage.

Identifying and navigating steel decarbonisation options

Determining the most impactful and cost-effective options to decarbonise steel production is complex. Ramboll’s new white paper seeks to help steel manufacturers navigate the choices that are available to implement today including energy and material efficiency optimisation, process improvements, integration of renewables, and supply chain management.

Real world case studies from Europe and Asia where steel decarbonisation measures are already in place have been highlighted for inspiration.

The paper also identifies which technological innovations are likely to mainstreamed and scaled in the coming years such as hydrogen-based steel production, carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS), and electrolysis of iron ore.
